Product Description:

This is no ordinary recipe book!  Following on from his first book, a very moving, tear jerking autobiography: "Madeleine - Losing A Soul Mate to Cancer", Clancy has brought together an exceptional collection of recipes, presented in an easy to follow format, for the whole world to try

Throughout the entire book one ingredient predominates and is clearly the mainstay of not only the recipes but is the essence of life itself.  In an interview not long before her passing, Madeleine was asked: "What is the most essential ingredient for the preparation of good food?"  Her emphatic answer: "Love!"

Whilst the Mauritius Australia Connection web site is now a Mauritian Community Portal web site for the Mauritian Community in Australia, Clancy and Madeleine always want to make available the very best of Mauritian Cuisine in print.

Mauritian cuisine will titillate your taste buds like no other cuisine. This unique cuisine is a combination of French, African, Malagasy, English, Indian, Tamil, Telegu, Muslim and Chinese gastronomic delights that will bring to your table a whole new spectrum of tastes and flavours. Evolving from this, the Mauritian Creole cuisine is also unique in that it evokes a subtle and flavoursome blend of its constituent cultural mix, supercharged with a rich culinary heritage.

It has been a long held dream of Madeleine and Clancy to share their passion for Mauritian Cuisine worldwide. This book does just that and will also share with you the rich culinary history of Mauritian Cuisine, honouring the people who left their own motherlands to call Mauritius home.

Product Description:

Mauritian independence in 1968 marked the end of a regime favorable to the Franco-Mauritians, the island’s white colonial elite. Now, in postcolonial Mauritius, this group is faced with a much more diverse power constellation and often feels in competition with others vying for their privileges. Though this is a clear departure from the colonial heydays, Franco-Mauritians have been able to continue their elite position into the early twenty-first century. This book focuses on the power of white elites still lingering on in postcolonial realities, and with regards to elites and power in general, addresses anew how an elite group aims to prolong its position over time.

The Mauritian Miracle: 1866 - 2018

By Rooma Meetoo

Released: 2018-08-13
Kindle Edition (53 pages)

The Mauritian Miracle: 1866 - 2018

Product Description:
Following the abolition of slavery in 1834, people of African descent refused to work for the Europeans. After having cleared forests and levelled lands for cultivation in difficult conditions, and pondering over all the suffering that they had endured, the slaves’ only wish was to savour their freedom. Therefore, the British had to bring to Mauritius thousands of indentured labourers by ships regularly from India to make roads, bridges and buildings but specially to work on the plantations. Around 1869, an epidemic of malaria, raging on the island, killed up to 30,000 of workers who came from India.

Despite their difficulties, and inspired by the strength of their ancestral culture, the people of Asian origin have persevered and made tremendous progress in Mauritius. The island’s cultural tolerance and economic and social development are largely influenced by the hard work and good attitude of the people of Indian origin, constituting the majority of the population.
This story depicts the arrival and happy installation in Mauritius of a group of indentured workers from India, especially from Bihar and Calcutta with a focus on the upward social mobility of their descendants.

There are four main themes in this play. First, the issue of oriental language teaching, of culture, and of proper education systems during the period 1866 to 2018. Second, the contribution of people coming from India and their descendants in furthering good moral values in our Mauritian society. Third, the constant struggle of our people against illiteracy, poverty and materialism. And fourth, the determination to find solutions for new labour trends and the fight against erosion of values for the present time and for the future.

This true story is written with slightly modified names in the form of a play containing five scenes. In each scene, a new generation expresses itself on stage. All scenes are set in Port-Louis, the capital of Mauritius.

Product Description:
On 12 March 2018, Mauritius celebrated fifty years as an independent nation amidst much fanfare. Yet behind the nation's official image of multicultural 'unity in diversity' lurk deep socio-economic inequalities and inter-ethnic tensions that are insistently critiqued in its literature. Against this backdrop, this book analyses how the idea of belonging - a sense of attachment to, and identification with, a place or people - is problematised in a range of contemporary francophone Mauritian novels.

The island-nation's complex history and the multi-ethnic composition of its modern-day population mean that belonging is a central but fraught issue in both reality and fiction. Waters explores how diverse forms of affirmative, affective belonging intersect with, and are frequently inhibited by, exclusionary 'politics of belonging' at communal, national or international levels. Using an eclectic theoretical approach to the central concept of belonging, Waters offers in-depth textual analyses of novels by leading Mauritian writers Nathacha Appanah, Ananda Devi, Shenaz Patel, Bertrand de Robillard, Amal Sewtohul and Carl de Souza. Despite their thematic and formal diversity, these novels are shown to be characterised by a common rejection of dominant discourses of ethnic, diasporic affiliation and by a common commitment to the ongoing, future-orientated project of Mauritian nationhood. As such, this book offers an original insight into the dynamics of belonging and exclusion in diverse, multi-ethnic societies.
